Deterring Suicide Bombers
Suicide bombers present a tricky problem for society - any normal means of deterrence clearly is off the table. It now appears Pakistan is beset by suicide bombers. How does a country like Pakistan deter this activity? In a country like the U.S. and in Western Europe, I presume the surveillance and intelligence gathering capabilities, combined with threats of mass-arrests and deportations (as happened after 9/11) will keep suicide bombings from ever being more than occasional one-off events. In Israel, they used to bulldoze the bomber's family home, but it's not clear that worked. What did work was building a wall.
In Pakistan these options wouldn't seem to be practical. They don't have the technology and infrastructure to keep track of people, and can they build a wall around the Pashtun Belt? So is there any non-barbaric means of deterrence available?

Well, 2 of the 4 London 7/7 bombers had pregnant wives, at the time, so it's hardly a guarantee.

The solution is to show potential suicide bombers understanding. However, the understanding must be finely calculated: too little and he says, "You don't understand!" and he blows himself and you up. Too much, and you put on the latest fashion in explosivewear and the two of you blow yourselves up together.
I think President Musharraf should declare emergency rule.
I believe Dano was referring to protected, safe sex. Having a pregnant spouse is just another reason to blow yourself up, particularly if you view yourself as a down troden muslim in an unfriendly country.
I do think that there is some merit in offering them more virgins on earth than they have been promised in heaven by their beliefs. More virgins, and you get to live? Who would turn that down? Of course, such an offer would have to come from outside the US as I don't think we have the supply to meet the demand. Might be an opportunity to get Thailand & Cambodia into the world peace movement as they appear, from recent news reports, to have an unlimited supply of this anti-suicide bomber ammo. Harlem
