It's Not The Farmers, Stupid
Few things annoy me more than when people state, as to why we have daylight savings, that "it's because of the farmers." No, dummy, farmers hate daylight savings - here's a quick article with some background. Here's an example of a self-confessed dummy - no big surprise there.

YES! Don't we all just love the falling back part, and hate the springing forward. Why is it that some state(s) don't have DST? Indiana for one.
Indiana's at the very western extreme of Eastern Time so maybe they just don't need DST to adjust the daylight.
Although with all the farmers there, you'd think they would want DST.
Many people are also of the mistaken belief that farmers are the reason that schools run from Fall through Spring with Summers off. The real reason of course is that teachers like having summers off and not because of some alleged benefit to farmers. Fall and Spring are busier times on the typical farm than Summer.
Lisa - AZ does not have DST as you know - that's because if there is one thing that is not needed in the summer in Arizona it's any more sunlight during waking hours.

Anonymous 2 - good point - I'm pretty sure the NYC school system has not felt enormous pressure from farming communities to close the school in the summer. And what area of the country has their harvest in August? Would even Minnesota be that early?
Intellectual Pariah - Well I think they're point is that nature makes their hours, not the clock, and so an arbitrary time shift of an hour is rather inconvenient. But there's, what, like 20 farmers left in the country?

I think the problem is that farmers just like to complain. They are a very whiny lot - constantly griping about the weather, how expensive water is, demanding subsidies - so why not complain about setting the clocks ahead to make life easier for the other 98% of the population?
