And This is Why We Need a Wall
From USA Today:
Soldiers patrolling border charged in alien-smuggling ring. The soldiers allegedly negotiated the details, price and number of people who would be smuggled north in a series of text messages uncovered by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents after Pfc. Jose Rodrigo Torres, 26, of Laredo, was arrested Thursday. Also arrested were Sgt. Julio Cesar Pacheco, 25, of Laredo, and Sgt. Clarence Hodge Jr., 36, of Fort Worth. A Border Patrol agent found 24 illegal immigrants inside a van Torres was driving on Interstate 35 near Cotulla, Texas, about 68 miles north of the border, the U.S. attorney's office said. Torres was in uniform at the time of his arrest.Strengthening the Border Patrol is a good idea, but these low-paid civil servants are quite corruptible, which is one reason a wall is necessary. Democrats like the idea of more Border Patrol agents because they always like more bodies on the government payroll and they don't care about border security. Bush just likes to pretend to be concerned about border security, and so offers up more agents. But catching people after they've crossed is about the worst way to go about securing a border. Mr. Bush, put up this wall!

Walls are for commies. This is what we need.
That is pretty cool, but perhaps a bit too lethal even for my tastes.
But what kind of shitty website is that - within a second some bigass AT&T drop down ad without a 'close' button covers 2/3 of the screen?
I like erob's idea.
However just a regular forty foot concrete wall that was dug a good ten foot down, with two razor wire-topped chain link fence-zones behind or in front of it would be enough.
No hispanic soldiers should be given border security duty. Your asking them to keep people they might even KNOW out. Tall order.
Nothing like automated, impersonal death to dissuade border jumpers.
We should be using this kind of stuff in Iraq. No muslim loon wants to face deadly automatons. You can't score points with Allah if you blow up robots.
I liked the robosnipers over the prison gate in "Idiocracy."

Actually, that won't be true if you put Cuban-American soldiers on the border. Cuban exiles generally hate Mexicans, because Mexicans are socialists if they aren't straight communists. Some of the later Cuban exiles had to go through Mexico for some reason to get into the US, and they told horror stories of how they would be spat on, insulted, and generally treated like dirt for daring to want to leave Castro's Happy Commie Paradise.
Also the Cubans, once here, worked their asses off to assimilate and become Americans, mostly without any government help besides being allowed into the country. That strengthens their contempt for illegal aliens.
Taking the human element out of border security has great advantages,
to the extent it is feasible.
If an illegal steps on a landmine,
who can he sue? If he gets shot by
the border patrol, his relatives can
try to go after the agents.
The issue of the alleged right to hostile crossing is starker and more abstract
with a landmine than a guard.
If you trespass on grounds which are dangerous you have no one but yourself to blame, especially when its fenced, etc.
