Is John Bolton a Dick?

It's hard to believe that President Bush could not find in all of Washington a single hard-line, tough-minded, cynical conservative to pick for UN Ambassador who wouldn't have his nomination put into jeopardy. Is this just sheer incompetence, or a willful desire to rub his power into his opponents' noses? A little of both, no doubt. But he makes life difficult for Republican senators who need to put themselves on the line to defend this guy. He's already alienated Republican congressmen with his willful defiance of their constituents' desire to prevent wholesale displacement by illegal immigrants. His Social Security privatization plan may or may not be a good idea, but it is surely a lower priority than other concerns - but again his party is on the spot having to support it. And we Republicans laugh at the Democrats' leader.

How can I have my kids read your Blog oage if you use the word Dick to describe someone who is not named Richard?

Ouch! No comment about content but a slap of the ruler for using the term "Dick". I never thought this blog was established for or designed to be read by people who didn't understand the context in which "dick" was used. Either the readers are too immature for the content or not receiving appropriate parental guidance regarding the reality of "adult" language for their age. John Bolton is a "Dick". He is also a "Prick" and a "Schmuck". Does that help?

Yes, I can't pull punches on terminology - slang or otherwise. In Bolton's case, dick just seems to be the best word. We wouldn't want something like the SuperStation version of "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" where Sean Penn accosts Ray Walston with "You Nerd".

It´s not just the Superstation who has committed this censoring crime. It´s been done over here in Europe as well, but maybe because it too is a Turner product. It destroyed the film for me.

By the way, I still think it was Sean Penn´s finest role.

You have to give Penn credit for slogging through his post-Spicoli career knowing he hit his height in his first feature.
I guess Turner gets a copy of a movie, cuts it to shreds, and then this gets to be THE version that is distributed for broadcast. The word "dick" is used on TV all the time now - it's very annoying.

There was recently an interesting article (can't remember where, helpful, huh?) about the chopping up of movies with directors steaming over it as the editing often changes the film so drastically that it is no longer the product they created. Apparently, once rights are sold, the integrity of the original product is in the hands of network, and sometimes local channel, hacks. Of course, the solution is to not sell the rights but then where is the dough? Ah, the money shot....or lack thereof.
